The Núcleo de Tavira of the Portuguese Red Cross (currently known as the Humanitarian Centre) was established on 13 November 1981 as a non-governmental organisation, governed by the rules of the Portuguese Red Cross.

Over the years the intervention of the Portuguese Red Cross has been increasing, in order to cover all age groups as well as various social and health problems.

The Humanitarian Centre of Tavira of the Portuguese Red Cross began its activity with the Rescue Unit and is currently the largest at a national level, covering four municipalities in its intervention, namely: Vila Real de Santo António (through its delegation), Castro Marim, Alcoutim and Tavira, the latter municipality where there is a greater number of social responses.
